In a world where corporations are overtaking the industry, driving many small, family-owned businesses out, the diverse businesses of Millersville have stuck together for over 25 years.
According to Steven DiGuiseppe, the acting president of the Millersville Business Association (MBA), the organization is more or less an alliance that helps all members by offering advertising and marketing opportunities.
Sept. 11, the MBA held a Business Expo at John Herr’s Market. Several different businesses set up tables in the market, and they also hosted a special game of bingo. Attendees were given a score card, and were told to get signatures from all attending businesses; those who got all of the signatures were entered into a raffle to win prizes, the grand prize being a $300 purse.
Each individual table hosted knowledgeable workers from their respective businesses. “The event went well. This one-day single event, gets businesses directly in front of a potential customer. Businesses are exposed to some people who never knew there was a tax preparation in the borough, or a pharmacy or physical therapy….not to mention several other entities,” DiGuiseppe said. “Hundreds of people, including MU students experienced the Expo.”
While the MBA is mostly a business-to-business organization, there are ways students can get involved, if interested. Even attending an event will lead a student to learn more about the surrounding businesses around them, DiGuiseppe said. He also mentioned that the office he works for, at Millersville University, offers an internship annually that provides students with an opportunity to meet with the businesses in the MBA and gain valuable experience.
The MBA meets monthly in Jack’s Restaurant, and they also have three annual events. The next two are Christmas in the Park and Saturday in the Park. Keep up to date with the MBA’s future events by going to http://millersvillebiz.com/
